GO TO THE NEAREST WINDOW. LOOK OUT FOR A FULL MINUTE. WRITE WHAT YOU SAW.
The surfaces are just started to warm up. The frost still glistens, but it will soon be gone under an unusually warm January morning. There is no snow and not a cloud in the bright blue sky. The grass and pasture have actual green spots. Spring stopped by to say hello this week. Is it too much to hope it lasts until summer?
The cherry trees are waiting for their moment to bud and blossom. Beyond the orchard the five baby goats I have left have their little faces pressed against the fence. They are looking at the side door waiting for me to walk out and feed them. Mariah is standing very still, probably asleep, near the gate, warming up in the sunshine. The roosters are also sunning themselves on their log perch near at the goats. On most warm mornings the chickens all gather where the sun hits first. On the pasture side of the fence our wood pile is shrinking. Fancy Nancy, the escape artist-goat, taught our herd to escape. With each adventure outside the fence they did a number on the apple trees. Can they grow without bark? The next owners will find out. My Grays, the sweetie pie barn cats, are stretching themselves on the fence.
Everyone is just waking up. Waiting for me to feed them. I am sure they are grateful for the warm sunshine that greets them. I am grateful that when I look at this finger print covered window I see them. It is a view I will dream of when it is all gone.
It can’t hear anything through the dining room window, but I don’t need to to know it is still and quiet. If I could use only one word to describe what I see, now and every morning, it would peaceful. It is so peaceful here. Occasionally a farm truck goes by or a dog in the far distance barks. The goats call back when I call out to them, but otherwise are usually quiet. My three roosters remind us of their presence throughout the day. If the wind isn’t howling off the Front, it is calm and there is no sound.
I imagine I may have to search out a place with no sound once in Oregon….
