I had wished and hoped for any other outcome. He came with us from the farm and as naturally as he had been there he settled into neighborhood living. I wasn’t sure how he would react. We sort of expected him to panic and try and find his way back home. We were happily wrong. He claimed a spot on the living room chair to sleep. He befriended the kids walking to and from school. He quickly dominated the other cats in the hood and often came home with battle scars. He slept all day and asked to go out at bedtime. About 3 am each morning he would pull on my bedroom window screen, asking to get let back in. If I slept through it, by some chance, Luna was licking my face to let me know her kitty was home.
One morning after walking Addi to school Papa was there to tell me a lady had told him she saw our cat in the grass near the busy road and he had been run over.
Later that day Papa, Landon and I took Headlight to the woods and found a nice spot to bury him. Landon had many questions about dying, Heaven and burying the body. He asked his questions, helped prepare the grave and then slid down the shale mountain side.
We said goodbye to the best cat ever, and then we hiked.
It will not be the same without him.
