WHAT ROLE DOES MUSIC PLAY IN YOUR LIFE?
Almost three full years ago we enrolled Addison in the “Let’s Play Music” Program. She was four and her teacher was concerned that her finger dexterity would not be strong enough to begin the program, that at the end of the three year commitment would leave her composing her own piano piece. I know my girl and I knew she could handle it.
Me on the other hand, I had no idea what I was getting in to!
My dad played the guitar and sang to us as children. During that mandatory year in 5th grade when they make you try an instrument, I chose the violin. I really enjoyed it, but the pressure to learn how to read music was too much and I quit before I really learned.
Do I follow the classics or know all the best bands and songs? No! I enjoy music that is fun to sing to and I enjoy songs that I can relate to. I love country music. When I sing my family tells me that I shouldn’t. Am I naturally musical? Really, really not.
But I wanted more for Addison. To me and to her grandmother, music was as important as learning math. With music I was giving her a skill she could enjoy her whole life.
Her tiny four-year old fingers were strong enough and together we began our musical journey. Now near the end, I will never regret the long practices and class time. We did it together, which is more valuable than any red chord. To me, in my life, music is a chance for Addison. She is very talented and she enjoys learning and making music.
Selfishly, I love when she plays and I look forward to her entertaining me!
Today, she began the work to compose her first piano piece. It is no surprise that her song is about herself and a horse.
