Sometimes life gives you a gift that you do not expect. Those precious surprises often turn out to mean the most. Knowing I have these people who celebrate my joy with me and also offer to carry some of my pain on their shoulders, means more to me than I can say.
“Friends are the family we choose for ourselves.”
Someone had mentioned to us as they were moving down the street, “You need to meet Kenny and Brittnie. I think you’d be good friends”
They were so right!
It all started on Halloween three years ago. My sister Sara was visiting and after answering the knock at the door for me, she said, “Do you know the 6 and a half foot tall ketchup bottle I just met?” We giggled and now that I know Kenny well, we wouldn’t expect anything less from him!
We were lucky enough to be neighbors on Rice Ave. for a few months before we moved out of town. Our kids fell in love almost instantly. Many weekend afternoon and weekday evenings we would haul the gang to one house or the other. Wine bottles in one hand and hamburger buns in the other our friendship started to bloom over BBQ and basketball games.
It was instantly easy and comfortable. Since then we’ve spent a lot of time together just being together. We have a lot in common and really, truly just enjoy each other’s company.
At this point in life I didn’t expect to meet and connect with another women so closely – a true gift I will always cherish. We have the same “God, can you believe he just said that!” look. Often more is said between us when there are no words.
This past weekend we were in Whitefish together. Brittnie’s Moo & Poo have a wonderful cabin on the lake. It was beautiful weekend and as always, we laughed and ate a lot. And I cried a lot too. Our everyday is numbered and realizing I will not see them whenever I want become heavy.
