I find making pasties super quick and easy! Pie crust for the outside and a mix of meat, onion, potato and carrot for the filling. Add whatever spice mixture you prefer. No gravy or sauce of any kind. When I'm making pasties for my dad, I use only salt and pepper!
My go-to Pie Crust Recipe: I double the below recipe to make 8-10 pasties.
Ingredients: 1 1/4 C flour
1/4 tsp salt
2 T cold butter
3 T cold tallow
6-8 T ice cold water
Stir the flour and the salt. Add butter and tallow and cut into flour using pastry knife. Add water and mix with a spoon, then form a ball with your hands. Split dough into 4-5 balls. Roll each dough ball out into the desired thickness.
Pasty Filling:
Ingredients: 2 pounds meat, cubbed (beef, elk or venison)
8 -10 peeled potatoes, cubed
5 - 6 peeled carrots, sliced
1 onion, chopped
Season with salt and pepper
Optional - add any seasoning you prefer
Mix all filling ingredients together.
The rest of the instructions totally depend on how big or small you want your pasties. I make them two ways, larger for a dinner serving and smaller, snack-sized for the hunting pack, or a quick lunch ect.
With each rolled out crust fill with the filling! Again, adjust to the size you want. Make them as full as you wish.
Fold over the crust and crease crust along the edge to close. Gently transfer to a lightly greased baking sheet or I prefer a baking stone, it makes the crust a little crunchier. Bake at 350 degress for about 60 minutes, less time if your pasties are smaller. Allow to cool slightly & enjoy. Freeze any left overs for a quick meal.
